King's Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder!
1990

Without question, some of the most iconic moments from adventure gaming history came from master game artist Andy Hoyos. This piece is a limited edition giclee of the opening scene from King’s Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder! (1990). It depicts the sleepy Serenia home of the wizard Crispin, owner of King Graham's traveling companion Cedric the owl. The cottage is overgrown but tranquil and the surrounding vegetation hints at the beauty, danger and glory that lies in wait for the gamer with its expressive trees, glimpse of white-capped mountains and diverse flora. This is the beginning screen to end all beginning screens. For gamers used to EGA graphics, Hoyos’ acrylic composition absolutely shimmered in 256 color glory on PCs across the world with the advent of this iconic game. This work is especially significant because of its role a 'key art' painting -- a style setter for overall look, color, mood, lighting. After Hoyos created this work, the production team used it as a stylistic example of what kind of artwork that is needed for the rest of the game. In this case the Crispin's House painting - it was a key artwork for the KQV production team but also was used as an actual in-game background.
