King’s Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder!
1990

Without question, some of the most iconic moments from adventure gaming history came from master game artist Andy Hoyos. Gamers of all stripes remember the moment when the mermaid Pearl leads King Graham across dangerous waters to reach the island home of the evil wizard Mordack, who has imprisoned Graham’s royal family. Wizard’s Island gleams with the hallmarks of Sierra art from the period. The dark castle bursts from hellish  depths, elevating a tropical, rocky island in a fit of unbridled imagination. The clouds swirl in in magentas and purples, casting a sinister pall over the aquamarine of the seascape. For gamers use to EGA graphics, Hoyos’ acrylic composition absolutely shimmered in 256 color glory on PCs across the world with the advent of King’s Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder! (1990). To look upon this scene is to still feel the dread and compulsion to click the ‘Save’ button as fast as possible with the spectre of imminent death looming. Fans and collectors alike can finally own this bit of gaming history in a special limited edition.
