4Ever Transit Authority

In 4Ever Transit Authority, turnfollow sampled the pathos found in mid-century street photography of everyday life, then sampled the highly reproducible color variations of pop-art screenprints and wrapped that up into a video game about the emotional states of infrastructure. As a bold statement wrapped in a very understated package, 4Ever Transit Authority challenges you to consider a procedurally generated city from the vantage of a rapid transit train car. As the player, your only agency is look around or change lines when a transfer is available. These minimal affordances of interaction direct attention to the construction of urban space, both in the detail and in the aggregate, while conjuring the bittersweet feeling of moving around the city alone.

For the VGA collection Carter Lodwick has created as a diptych of two compositions: 4Ever A and 4Ever B. Each on their own offer a more textured version of the game experience in a single frame. As a pair they also represent the paradoxical combination of visual pleasure and ennui that the game creates through the repeating (yet always slightly different) urban landscapes.

Carter Lodwick makes up half of turnfollow, an independent game company based in Chicago and Los Angeles. As turnfollow, Lodwick and and Ian Ensley produce visually-focuced narrative games.
