Battle Chef Brigade (2017) by Trinket Studios is charming and beguiling. Players fight monsters and use their parts to cook meals in a final competition reminiscent of the television show Iron Chef. Trinket artist Eric Huang drew upon influences Studio Ghibli, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko’s Avatar: the Last Airbender, and Japanese developer Capcom’s fighting games to realize fast-paced, entertaining monster battle sequences. The animation is responsive, quick, and satisfying. The hand-drawn ink and watercolor aesthetics, distilled from rich referents in entertainment media, when combined with a lighthearted dialogue and story, give the game a fun and pleasing look and feel.
