Welcome to the first edition of VGA Zine!

You may have seen our announcement in May 2020, where we introduced a new phase in VGA’s history. We’ve left the proverbial nest of our Bucktown gallery space. And, like the rest of the art world imagining post-COVID gallery operations, we’re looking to a cool thing called the World Wide Web to continue our organization’s mission.

That mission will be carried out and documented by VGA Zine.

This zine is a sounding board for piping hot takes, cool refreshing takes, long thinks, and short bursts of insight on video game art (+related new media) and its relationship with contemporary art, art history, and culture writ large.

Conceived as a nimble open format of four items a month, this zine is a work in progress and there are a lot of directions VGA Zine can go from here. We look forward to hashing out new content that furthers our goal to exhibit and promote video game as works of art.

This work may take many forms, and the Zine will not be limited to text-based articles. As we experiment with different ways to show the work of talented, overlooked new media artists, we hope to expand our platform to include digital exhibitions and streaming.

This first issue is made up of contributions by members of our staff, but it’s our intention to open this platform up to include a much wider variety of voices and experiences.

If you have ideas or feedback we would like to receive them at info@vgagallery.org.
