What VGA Played This Month - June 2020

Here in this regular feature, we’ll let you know what games we’re playing, why we’re playing them, and what goes through our minds (or doesn’t) when we do. Got a suggestion for something we should be playing? Hit us up at info@vgagallery.org.

My current obsession is Space Haven by Bugbyte Ltd., which is currently in Early Access - it’s a strategy sim/base-builder (or spaceship builder) along the lines of Rimworld, a touch of Dwarf Fortress, and FTL. I’ve also been trying to achieve all the badges for Into the Breach, because I’m a turn-based strategy nut. And when I need to turn my brain off, I play Mini Metro on my Google Pixel, because Disasterpeace’s insanely inventive and Zen modular soundtrack is some serious soul balm.

Terraria, or in other words, 2D Minecraft but with bosses. Super open world game with some bosses to help add some objectives. You can spend literally hours designing houses or exploring the different biomes they have to offer. It’s a pretty chill game until you accidentally kill a pretty looking moth and it summons the Empress of Light. Or “accidentally” throwing a bomb in your friends house. (My friend wasn’t too happy with me, on both occasions)

Margaritaville plays in the distance.

Margaritaville plays in the distance.

After years of watching Assassin’s Creed cutscenes on Youtube as a weird sci-fi period drama series, I’ve taken to playing Odyssey this month. Say what you will but jogging frantically around a weirdly already crumbling Ancient Greece as a buff lady with a bird is a nice stand-in for an actual vacation.

I’ve been greatly enjoying Sea of Thieves as a way to spend time with friends. The collective collaboration on performing a group task such as sailing a ship or solving a mystery has really helped me connect to a multiplayer game in a way I never have before. It’s great to just be chatting and relaxing, only to be suddenly pulled into some exciting conflict or quest. Then when I’m alone, I just play MLB The Show 2020 so I can play as bad as the Marlins would be if they were playing baseball right now.
